Listening to the pledge drive
Normally it's an exciting thing to listen to the pledge drive at WUFT-FM. After all, I felt a bond to the station, anchor that it was of the community. Now that the music fans have been disowned, we are on the outside looking in.
The fall drive keeps up the tradition of a poster as a membership premium. This year's poster is Path through Tomoka. When I lived out that way, I liked to drive through Tomoka State Park while listening to music on WUFT-FM. The analog signal reaches there even though it is toward the outside edge of the listening area. So now the poster arrives to mock WUFT's music fans: the HD2 signal falls many miles short of Ormond Beach.
If you have been in the habit to call up the membership volunteers at this time of year, you can still do so. Make it an UNPledge.

Pledge Drive
Well, I used to listen to the pledge drives and then pretty much ignore them. I liked so many different kinds of programming that I sent in my pledge without getting a premium or "voting" for a particular program. Post-Classic 89 I always have a CD in the slot in the car or on my kitchen radio so if I happen to be listening to the news and the pledge drive starts I just switch over.
I am looking at the pledge
I am looking at the pledge numbers and they look surprisingly better than I thought. Morning Edition came in a little weak, about 800-1000 lower than last fall (and about 2500 less than the Spring), but it was decent considering the economy. Dianne Rehm is doing alright, but if it continues at this pace for the rest the drive, I don't see how it could possibly pay for itself (does that mean Dianne would be axed given the Dean's self-sufficient orders?). The mid-day hours are usually pretty weak, so I will provide an update in the late evening.
Membership Drive
I think that what I find most infuriating is that on the station's web page they have the gall to continue insisting that your pledged dollars will go to the continuation of current programming. They have no shame and now lie automatically. I have no doubt that this will somehow end up being "the most successful pledge drive ever." If that happens then it will confirm that they don't really need listener's pledges and that they NEVER DID!!! How cheated will we feel then?
